Showing off their bowls

Both pups eat out of puzzle feeders for breakfast and dinner. I am a constant worrier about bloat with my deep chested pups and so this is a good way to help ease my mind with a “forced” meal slow down 🙂 It also provides a bit of mental exercise first thing in the day.

Nala is a gulper and will finish a meal from a normal bowl in less than a minute. With her current puzzle feeder, her consumption time is up to 4 minutes- which still isn’t very long in the grand scheme of things, but the slow down rate is pretty awesome. She gives it an 8 out of 10 because she’s upset I’ve hindered her ability to eat fast- she likes doing everything fast, so she does her best to eat from this as quickly as possible.

Grizzly is a delicate eater- he doesn’t gulp or rush. If you give him a piece of bacon, he takes it delicately and savors it. So for Grizz, his puzzle bowl is more of an enrichment experience, versus a necessary slow down. His feed time went from 3 minutes with a normal bowl to 6-7 minutes with the slow feeder bowl. Grizz gives is a 9 out of 10 only because he says he doesn’t gulp nearly enough to be slowed down, but he does enjoy the food journey it provides.

We have a variety of these bowls around the house, accumulated over time. The price point on most of these bowls is pretty good- ranging from $8-$15 depending on the brand, pattern and size. I switch up the patterns every so often to keep things interesting. The first few days of a new pattern, feed times slow down for both pups.

He makes a mess!

I think my only complaint is that they are not bigger. Each of our bowls are a size “large” and fit about 1.5cups of kibble perfectly. If a dog eats anymore than that for a meal, a larger bowl would be needed. I haven’t done much looking to see if anything bigger is available, although I am sure there is!

They are available on Amazon, Chewy, Dog.com and in local pet stores.
